Dishwasher: typical service life and when to plan
A dishwasher typically lasts 9 to 12 years on the published range. What moves that number, how it stops, and the year to put on your calendar.

The typical range
9 to 12 years
That is the typical service life for a dishwasher on the published range. It is a range for the type, not a promise about the unit in your house. Some run well past the far end; some stop short of the near end.
Range source: click-4-coverage.com SYSTEMS table (src/lib/systems.ts, main, read 2026-10-16). Category: Appliance.
Independent figure: InterNACHI chart: Dishwasher: 9 years (undated); NAHB 2007: Dishwashers: 9 years. It is not the same as the published range above. Both are printed so you can see the difference; the published range stays the ranked value on every table on this site.
The biggest lever
Water hardness and filter cleaning. Hard water leaves scale on the spray arms, the heating element and the valves. Most current models also have a filter at the bottom of the tub that has to be pulled and rinsed now and then, and plenty of owners never learn it is there.
On your walk-through
- Pull the bottom rack and find the filter.
- Look under the sink at the supply line and the drain hose for drips.
- Read the label on the edge of the door for the model and serial number.
How it stops, in plain words
Failure mode: Wet
When a unit like this quits, water tends to end up where it should not: on the floor, in the cabinet, under the flooring. The repair is one question. The water that got out is a second one, and it usually belongs to your homeowner's policy, not to a service contract. Read both documents with that split in mind.
When to plan: a date, not a symptom
Do not wait for a noise or a puddle to start thinking about a dishwasher. Work it out from the install year instead. Add 9 to the year it went in: that is the year the typical range opens, and the year to price it, budget for it and decide what you would do. Add 12: that is the year the range closes.
Put the opening year on your calendar today. Age is a planning input, not a diagnosis, and nothing on this page says your unit will stop in any given year.
| Installed | Age in 2026 | Range opens | Range closes | Where 2026 falls |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2008 | 18 | 2017 | 2020 | past the far end of the range |
| 2011 | 15 | 2020 | 2023 | past the far end of the range |
| 2014 | 12 | 2023 | 2026 | inside the range |
| 2017 | 9 | 2026 | 2029 | inside the range |
| 2020 | 6 | 2029 | 2032 | before the range opens |
| 2023 | 3 | 2032 | 2035 | before the range opens |
| 2024 | 2 | 2033 | 2036 | before the range opens |
Arithmetic only: install year plus 9, install year plus 12, and 2026 minus the install year. No other figure is used.
If you cannot find the install year
Look for a data plate or label on the unit. Many carry a manufacture date, or a serial number that encodes one; the maker's site or a technician can decode it. Until you have a date, write the age down as unknown rather than guessing, and ask for it to be read at the next service visit.
